Deadpool the GAME! (1 reply)

I'm not sure how many people on this thread are Marvel Comic fans or fans of different stuff based on Marvel but I thought I'd post for those who may not know. Deadpool, the Merc with Mouth, the insane, fourth-wall breaking immortal psycho is getting his own video game next year. I've come to love Deadpool since he's so crazy and hilarious. I liked him in Hulk vs. Wolverine and in Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions. So I thought I'd share my love for Deadpool by posting a link to the teaser trailer for the game. Also this could work for Bakunyuu Baka since we get a brief glimpse of a bosomy woman in the trailer. Please enjoy.

Deadpool Teaser

Exosquad! (no replies)

Yeah, I watch American shows, too.

So, Exosquad is an action/sci-fi cartoon that ran from 1993-1995 for 52 episodes, produced by Will Meuginot. While the series never achieved the same level of popularity as some of the Warner Brothers productions, such as Batman: the Animated Series, the show did show just how far American animation had come in terms of writing and plot direction, and the show did take some turns into rather dark territory, and not just in that supporting and even the occasional main protagonists weren't entirely safe from being killed. It also took a look at things such as racism, and how war was generally not to be treated as fun or exciting, without resorting to the ham-fisted moralizing of the after-school PSA.

Will Meuginot himself was quite familiar with Gundam while making Exosquad- while he refers to First Gundam as the WWII Pacific Theater in space, he called Exosquad the European Theater in space, and it does show. The series is rife with WWII references, most of which would probably go far over the head of the show's supposedly intended audience. still, this is probably one of the best shows of its type, and I do actually rank it above most of the Gundam series that I have watched to date- Exo-Squad handles much of its subject matter in a mature and subdued way that isn't normally seen in animation, leading to a number of fans to dub Exosquad "The American Anime", though it is far superior to most offerings from both sides of the Pacific. One thing, though- this show is very, very '90s in some of its aesthetic choices. Beware.

The entire series is up on hulu.com, and if you're not American, I'm sure the show is eminently findable through the usual channels of torrents and other freebooters and corsairs.

And since I'm basically doing a Let's Watch of the show on another forum, why not import it here?

Episode 1: The Pirate Scourge.

Well, way to spoil the show, opening.

It's the 22nd century, and the 50th anniversary of the Neo-Sapien rebellion. So, Earth was awesome, Venus was being terraformed, and mining was going on at Mars. The new prosperity was built on the backs of a race of artificial humans, the physically imposing Neo-Sapiens, bred to slave away in the harsh conditions of Mars and Venus, and as these things tend to go, they got all rebellion and managed to seize much of Mars and Venus. Things didn't really work out, however, as baseline man was still incredibly numerous and armed with a new weapon, the Exo-Frame, which are basically what happens if you make a Power Loader from Aliens so angry that it hulks out and sprouts guns and missiles and armor. The rebellion was crushed, not much changed, and all that's left is the memory of a whole lot of bloodshed and "Never Forget".

The freighter captain doesn't like the news anchor delivering our [strike]backstory[/strike] history lesson, so shuts him off while his co-dude busies himself with a dancing-girl hologram. All is set for easy sailing back to Earth from the Asteroid belt when suddenly pirates. The freighter tries to run, but the pirates have brought an ass-kicking that just won't wait. the smaller of the two pirate vessels docks with the freighter, and the captain calls out a mayday.

Meanwhile on Mars, joyriding. A squad of E-frames, looking much more awesome and shiny than their 50-year predecessors, rushes through the Martian canyons, and one of the pilots is a Neo-Sapien- maybe things have changed a little. They eventually come to Olympus Mons, where, according to Marsala, the Neo-Sapien rebels made their last stand. Any further history lessons are brought to an end by the arrival of the local Martian equivalent of the fuzz, who shoot first and ask questions never. Apparently their little visit wasn't exactly sanctioned. The squad returns to their totally awesome ship, the Exofleet Carrier (or Exocarrier for short) Resolute, where a briefing is ongoing about the latest pirate attack. The commander of the squad, J.T. Marsh, is chewed out by the Resolute's captain, Marcus for antagonizing the Neo-Sapiens. However, the joyride was authorized by someone higher up, Admiral Winfield.

(Oh, and, oh God, that hair, all of it.)

At any rate, Marsh's squad is on search and rescue duty. Once everyone else leaves, Winfield makes a big deal to Marsh about how the attacking pirates were from Simbacca's clan, which are some top dogs of pirates or something. And apparently Winfield was just covering J.T.'s ass by pretending to have authorized it. Ahh, favoritism.

The Resolute motors along to the location of the freighter that was attacked earlier in the ep, and prettyboy rookie Kaz Takagi and grizzled slob veteran Wolf Bronski watch Alec SHOW THEM HIS MOVES, Kaz=impressed, Wolf=Scoffs. Maggie Weston, the tech chief, asks for a hand with dragging something big and technical looking, and she gets a pair of comedians. Marsala helps, out, picking up the whole thing with one of his hands, no probs. Kaz is sure glad the Neos are on our side, yes sir.

So, our band boards the shuttle with prodding from the Sergeant, Rita Torres, who puts Bronski on point in case of anything nasty, and Bronski assures her there's nothing nastier than him. considering his main character traits are being unshaven and horrible belching, I think we all believe it. Zero-G clumsiness aside, things are pretty grim. The captain is dead, and a quick check shows that pretty much the whole rest of the crew was also killed by the pirates. The ship is in rough shape, too, and the communications are shot, literally. Marsh calls for a repair shuttle from the Resolute. Kaz finds a dude trapped under some plating who is still alive, and he disobeys Marsh's "no touching" order to free him. This sets off a booby trap left by the pirates, a tidy little switch for a fusion bomb left behind to kill anyone investigating the freighter.

To make a long sequence short, the squad escapes, but they can't get through to the repair shuttle in time, so the repair shuttle and its crew are vaporized in the freighter's explosion. They rescue the survivor, at least.

Apparently the pirates have thrown a rock at the hornet's nest one too many times, and the head of the Earth assembly calls for all out war against the pirates. Another rep, who I shall call Senator Snivelton due to his script delivery, calls for negotiations with the pirates because they already had a space war, but is shot down in about half a second. The governor of Mars, the Neo-Sapien Phaeton steps up to say that war is bad, yes, but it is necessary, and is to be taken seriously. How seriously? All of Exo-Fleet seriously. The measure is approved that day, making it the most decisive space-congress ever.

Exo-Fleet gets under way, and Nara Burns, another member of Able Squad, sends a videogram back home to her family on Venus. Marsh sees Bronski, who got banged up in the escape from the exploding freighter, and Marsh grounds him despite his insistence that he could still fly with his injuries, reminding him that they lost a lot of good people on that last mission, once again reminding the audience the audience that people die in this show. Bronski makes no protests after that. Oh dear. We end up at the end of a bad joke, and the anchor from earlier in the ep shows up. Alec bails as soon as the bad journalist stereotype whose name I can't be bothered to remember starts grilling Marsh about the freighter op, and Marsh protects Takagi, who, in his body language,s till seems rather guilty about the repair crew getting killed from him trying to help the survivor.

The fleet has entered the asteroid thicket, and Simbacca gives the order to attack followed by an ominous "take no prisoners", as is proper. Their attack with guided asteroids is mostly a bust, as the Resolute is just too cool to lose, and Simbacca decides that a glancing hit from his small trap is enough of a crippling blow to Exofleet to de-cloak and attack. Oh, and the fact that the Resolute has an evasive action button pleases me for some reason. Admiral Winfield has to order Marcus to launch E-frames, as the captain is more of a "big-gun" type than "common sense" type, and Able squad launches for the first time in the series. Bronski apparently recovered along the way.

And... Honestly, it's one hell of a space battle to start the series on. Dozens of warships duking it out at knife-fighting range with nasty navigational hazards thrown into the mix, and the Resolute shows that it has got some serious teeth, making it more akin to, say, a Battlestar than anything. The episode ends with Able squad scattered from the chaotic fighting, and Bronski in dire straits.

WWII References

The first one we get in the series is actually rather subtle- the show uses the WWII version of the military phonetic alphabet.

Iron Chef! (1 reply)

The original, that is.

So, Iron Chef is the one competition-based program I watch consistently, and it is quite a trip- basically, any 'cooking duel' sequence in any Japanese media made from the '90s on owes everything to Iron Chef, including the cooking duel sidequest in Suikoden 2. The original show ran for six seasons on Fuji TV from 1993 onwards, and eventually found its way to America, airing on Food Network, obtaining a rather large fanbase, including from among pro-wrestling fans. This was in part because one of the commentators was Shinichiro Ohta, a well-known commentator in the Japanese Pro-Wrestling circuit.

If My Memory Serves me Correctly...

So, the basic "story" is the following- An eccentric, flamboyant member of the idle rich (Played by Takeshi Kaga, or Chairman Kaga in the show) has finally realized his dream- building a kitchen stadium, a cooking arena that he hopes will produce new and amazing cuisine. To that end, he began picking some of the best chefs from Japan to act has his Iron Chefs, each one a master of a different type of cuisine. At the start of the series there were three Iron chefs- one for French, one for Japanese, and one for Chinese food (Chen Kenichi was the only Iron Chef who was on the show from start to finish), but a bit later on, an Iron Chef Italian was added to the show. Kaga invites top chefs from Japan and elsewhere to compete against his Iron Chefs for nothing but fame and glory.

The challenger chooses which Iron Chef he (or she) will face in an episode, and Chairman Kaga will start the competition by revealing the episode's ingredient, which range from the common to the bizarre throughout the show. The participants have one hour to produce a number of dishes that all utilize the same ingredient in different ways (usually three to five, but there have been outliers). After the hour is up, the dishes will go to the panel of judges, who rate the various dishes- the one who gets more judges on their side is the winner. If the panel of four goes half and half, then it comes down to the total points given by the judges. If that ties, then there is an overtime battle with a new ingredient, and if that turns out a draw, Kaga declares both participants winners.

I Summon the Iron Chefs!

While the show is mostly dubbed, there's nothing really incredibly awful about it, and the second part that may have drawn the PW fans is the sense of theatrics carried by the show- which is a good part of the fun, such as the chorus that accompanies the arrival of the Iron Chefs- except in the case of Iron Chef Italian, who rises into the stadium accompanied on his platform by a live orchestra.

While the Iron Chefs are all distinct in their character in behavior, but a good number of the challengers have been real characters too, helped by how Kaga really talks up the challengers as opposed to his own Iron Chefs.

"Dr. Yukio Hattori has two faces. The first is as an educator, the president of the Hattori nutritional academy. His second is as the latest successor to a five hundred-year long cooking tradition..."

And other such examples abound in the show.

-The Italian cook Marco Molinari, known as the greatest pasta chef in the world, who brought his own marble slab, rubber gloves, goggles, and surgical mask to make sure everything was just right for the creation of his pasta.

-Katsuyo Kobayashi, who put home cooking against high cuisine. Not only did she complete a record seven dishes on the hour, she let Kaga pick her opponent, and she even had time to nip over to the Iron Chef's side and remind him of things he was forgetting.

-Hisano Hirano, the culinary trendsetter, arriving in the stadium dressed to impress and with an entourage of lovely ladies. Verbatim- "If your dishes fail to impress a woman, that's not good food. I say to myself- 'is my food good enough to make young ladies excited'?"

-Shinya Tasaki, the world's top sommelier, eager to show he knows to do more than just talk about fine foods.

-Toshiro Kandagawa, a smug and short-tempered five time challenger who racked up three wins against three different Iron Chefs, and even forced the second Iron Chef Japanese into retirement.

-"Mad" Koji Kobayashi, who hadn't cooked professionally in years and, in fact, worked as a grocery store truck driver.

And so on. I don't know if the show is still airing on television, but pretty much every episode that aired in America can be found here: [www.youtube.com]

Many candidates were considered for the position, but I have settled on Hanako Ikezawa, the sweet 'n crispy chess player/Pool shark from the visual novel Katawa Shoujo.

This is a frivolous announcement, of course, but most people don't take this long to decide an avatar. :)

Quite Interesting indeed. Following that thread, I came across a Panel Show called Quite Interesting. It is, essentially, a comedy trivia quiz show hosted by Stephen Fry with a number of other British comedians and/or actors as panelists. As with any panel show, it rarely matters who wins, the scoring system is incomprehensible, and it is mainly for the comedy. One of the surefire ways to lose points however, is to give the obvious, but wrong answer, especially in the "General Ignorance" (as opposed to common knowledge) round.

The real funny comes, however, when the panelists give a totally off-the-wall answer that turns out to be right.

"Could someone tell me something interesting about the first Geishas?"
"They were all men."
"Yes!"
"...Oh God!"

All of the episodes to date are found here: [www.youtube.com]

R-9's Tabletop boredness thread. (29 replies)

Given that there has been a bit of a lull in my own tabletop pen-and-paper RPG schedule, I'm going to start inflicting my random stuff on you folks. Granted, it is going to be at least tangentially related to the board's interest, especially since I will be talking about at least one game that has certain explicit bits of genre emulation blah blah blah.

So, this is really a place for me to talk about tabletop RPGs and explore them through their own methods of character generation.

There was some good fighting, but it wasn't much of a challenge.

So, I like fighting games. I'm not especially good at them, but I still like the idea- however, the genre has been almost constantly hobbled by three major barriers- Cheating AI, extreme twitch requirements, and simple execution barriers. given their popularity, there have only really been a couple of notable RPGs based on the genre.

The first was White Wolf, creator of the Urban Fantasy RPGs like Vampire: The Masquerade and Hunter: The Reckoning and whatnot. They made the Streetfighter RPG, which was not all that good due to White Wolf's insistence on using the same system for everything from low-powered urban fantasy (Vampire) to warring between the reincarnation of ancient demigod-kings (Exalted), so it was practically a guaranteed failure among genre fans.

The more recent entry is Fight!: The Fighting Game RPG by Christopher Peter, otherwise known as "Fight Fighting Game Game". This used a new system from the ground up built heavily towards genre emulation, and containing a combat engine built towards emulating the good aspects of fighting games (the tactical decision-making, fights between equals) while cutting out all of the bad stuff (see above, plus infinite combos).

All of the initial advice in the game book is geared towards getting the GM and players alike invested in the tropes of the genre, such as "The Human Body is the Most powerful Weapon", "Combat is Unavoidable", and so on, and it does put a good number of tools in the GM's box for even non-fighting scenes. It's a fine enough game, and I'm not just saying that because I did some work for one of the more recent books.

So, let's do something with it.

Character Creation.

While the actual mechanics concerning character creation sprawl over the first third or so of the book, it's really quite simple to create a character once you have them all down.

So, let's start with re-creating Ryuko Kuwashima, from my one-shot "A ninja in Paris".

Now, as a starting character, she is Power level 1. The Max level is normally 8, as a not to the fact that most of the original fighting games (SFII, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, etc.) had eight levels of difficulty. She can work her way up the chain though earning Glory form her actions in actual fights, but for now, she's level one. This gives her a Life Bar of 30 and a fighting spirit of 10. Life bar is basically a character's per-round hit points, whereas fighting spirit is a pool of points that an be added to certain actions, like control and initiative rolls, defending, accuracy, and so on- however, the amount of FS that can be used on any particular roll is capped by the character's power level, in this case, 1. Unlike many other tabletop RPGs, losing a fight doesn't really men you die, just hat you lost the fight, and have got to move on and get better an what not like any shounen protagonist.

Next is her basic stats: Strength, Speed, and Stamina. Stats can range from -1 to 2, with each step away from zero increasing or decreasing the relevant die rolls by one step. For example, a strength of 1 would mean that a move that normally did 1d6 damage would do 1d8 instead, a Stamina of 2 would reduce a move that did 1d10 damage to 1d6, and so on. There are two spreads we can choose from: A one in two stats and a zero in one, or a two in one stat, a zero in one, and a -1 in the last one. A -1 in a stat can be a big hindrance, and it is in-genre to kinda reward generalists, as the most iconic fighting game characters are the all-rounders, like Ryu, Jin Kazama, Dimitri, Sol-Badguy, and so on. We will use the general spread, giving her a one in strength, (Ninjas must hit hard), a zero in stamina, and a one in speed. Each point in speed can be added to either control rolls (which affects what and how many moves you can pull in a turn) or initiative (which affects your chances of going first). Since she's a ninja, we'll go with initiative.

So, now we get to skills. First on the list are combat skills, which form the other pat of the basis of the character's in-combat performance. there are three defensive skills (Defense, Evasion, Tactics), which interact with attacks in slightly different ways, Combo, which affects how many moves a character can string together in one attack, and Ki, which affects the damage of Ranged (fireball-ish) special moves- because a character doesn't get an enormous amount of combat skill points over their career (5 to start and three at each level up), building you character with long-ranged attacks in mind is a non-trivial investment of points that ensures that ranged fighters don't have an overwhelming advantage over non-ranged characters. For now, we will put three points in evasion and two in combo. Your power level also affects the maximum levels of your defensive skills.

Other skills are things that affect what the character does outside of combat with other Fighters, and we have fifteen points to play around with, and since we are at PL 1, our skill cap is 3. Since we're thinking "fighting game/anime ninja", the skill choices are fairly obvious from the semi-extensive list the game gives us. Stealth gets boosted to 3, as does Danger Sense. We also put 3 into fast reflexes and perception. Now, 2 of these are going into Thug thrashing, which is for certain type of combat- there are two kinds of combatants in Fight!, divided into Fighters, and everything else, which are classified as Thugs. Thug Thrashing gives her extra actions when fighting thug groups. The last point goes into shadowing- ninjas are supposed to follow people, after all.

Now we get to qualities and quirks. Qualities are mechanical perks and the like you can hang off your character for certain benefits, and Qualities that offer large benefits may also have some drawbacks. Quirks are basically personality traits that don't necessarily help our character, but playing them out as the inconveniences that they are can earn you back story points, which power the special abilities of certain qualities. Qualities either run towards interaction, affecting how the character fights (such as making the character Big, Tall, Light, whatever), or even boosting other non-combat skills. there are also Weaknesses, which may be taken in exchange for more Qualities or skill points.

Now, there are about ten different appearance qualities and weaknesses total, and we're going to be using a few for our ninja. The first on is just Attractive, which gives interaction bonuses to those who find girls attractive. building up from that, the next one, given this forum, would be Buxom, which exists for the purpose of emulating those female characters in fighting games that have incredibly huge, bouncing breasts that move at the slightest provocation. This also boosts interaction as above, but the user can spend a story point to give such opponents a penalty to their first control roll of the fight, and their inconvenience can be played up to possibly earn back story points. Considering how I wrote her, I would stack Cute on top of that, to further put out her particular method of attraction. The last quality will be reserved for a more fighting-oriented quality, Mobile, which makes it easier for her to traverse the battlefield more quickly. characters can earn more qualities as they level up, or instead trade them for skill points or enhanced fighting spirit.*

Weaknesses are not to be taken lightly, as they do provide strong drawbacks and require rather extreme behavior for the character in order to qualify. But, since she's a ninja, she likely has a duty-related one. In fact there's one called Duty-Bound, so we'll just throw that in there, as her duties to the Kuwashima ninja clan. We'll spend the rebate at the end.

Next come quirks, which are little-to-large things to hang a distinctive personality on. Now, while she wasn't scantily clad enough to really qualify for the 'Suggestive attire' Quality, she still probably count in terms of fanservice, so we'll stack in the "Fanservice" quirk. Given her actions in the story, we could probably throw "Short-tempered" in there as well.

The last part is, of course, the Special Moves. Special moves are not bought pre-made, but rather assembled by the players out of individual elements, the number of which determined by the level of the special move. The level of a special move affects three things- first, how many elements the move can be built out of. Second, how much experience the character gets for successfully hitting with the move,** and third, how much Control is required to actually use the move.*** We have ten move points to start with, and gain ten every level, so there's no shortage of move points- so we will build 2 level 3 moves and one level 4.

Each special move has a number of elements equal to their level+1 so a level 3 special has for elements. Some move abilities cost two, or even three elements. Basic moves aren't built, they're just 1d4 damage, modified by the character's strength up or down and cost 1 control to use. There is damage downscaling in combos.

So, we'll start with her Kusari-gama, and since weapons are really just extensions of a character's moveset in most fighting games, they don't get any special modeling in Fight!. So, since it's on a chain,we'll give it Reach, which expands its range but isn't as good at long-range as an actual fireball, and entangle, which forces their opponent to lose an action if they haven't acted yet when the weapon hits, and causes an initiative penalty besides. Then we add Increased damage, which does what it says on the tin.

Now, since ninjas are known for mobility, I'm going to hand her over a fast running attack. First, we make it Mobile, which allows Ryuko o move farther before actually attacking. Since the move I have in mind is actually something of a groin shot (her preferred weapon against otherwise strong-looking opponents and most male hentai "protagonists"), we'll give it the "Moves Low" option as well, which makes it harder to interrupt with attacks. Because we want it to have more oomph, we'll give it a liability- slow recovery, which reduces her initiative for the next turn if it misses. this gives us an additional element to play with, so we add Increased damage twice and Increased Stun, which increases the move's ability to dizzy opponents.

Now the last move is gonna be one o' those sexy but also painful-looking ninja throws, so it's going to have the Throw element attached. this costs two elements, and she has to be right on top of an enemy to use it (causing no stun), but it has an extra bonus to hit and automatically knocks down an opponent on that hit. We will stack a couple of increased damage on there, but also add fast recovery- after all, it'll hurt them more than it'll hurt her, and she'll be in a better position- if the attack hits, her control roll on the next round is increased by one die step.

Now, we still have a point floating around due to taking that weakness, to we will add that point to her Defense skill, as there are times when Evasion can't be used to escape attacks.

So, in the end, our completed character sheet will look something like this:

Ryuko Kuwashima
PL 1 (0 Glory)
Life Bar: 30
Fighting Spirit: 10

Strength: 1
Speed: 1
Stamina: 0

Control: 1d6
Initiative: 1d8

combat Skills:
Defense: 1
Evasion: 3
Tactics: 0
Combo: 2
Ki: 0

Skills:
Stealth 3
Danger Sense: 3
Perception: 3
Fast reflexes: 3
Thug thrashing: 2
Shadowing: 1

Qualities:
Attractive
Buxom
Cute
Mobile

Weaknesses:
Duty-Bound (Kuwashima ninja clan)

Quirks:
Fanservice
Short-tempered

Moves (All moves have had Ryuko's strength and Increased Damage factored into he damage die).

Basic move: 1d6 damage

Kusari-Gama (L3) (D, DF, F+P) 1d8+1 damage
Reach, Entangle

Stone-crushing hammer (L3) (D, DB, B+P) 1d10 Damage
Mobile, moves low, Increased Stun, slow recovery

Scissor crush (L4) (F, D, DF+K) 1d10 damage
Throw, Fast Recovery

So, there you have it, one busty, hotheaded young ninja girl out to prove herself in the world of fighting, ready to go.

------------

*Because Buxom is a quality rather than a stat or quirk, this too can be acquired by a female character on leveling up, acquiring her own huge pair of jigglers. While some GMs wouldn't allow it, I would for either metagame (character redesign) or normal reasons, like a character developing after a time skip, suddenly blossoming forth after unlocking more of her body's full "potential", or she may have been just plain hiding her enormous assets until she was more respected as an actual fighter.

**because of the nature of some players in video fighting games to just spam certain effective moves, the EXP gain is limited to only the first time a character hits with a special move in a fight.

***At PL3 and up, fighters can build Super moves. while these are built out of a number of elements double the move's level, they are built, at a minimum, at level 5, require super energy, and have a couple of restrictions on building them. The controller inputs aren't necessary, but they can be based off of the control needed to use the move, and is a good guide when converting moves from video fighting games. Here, it's just flavor.

Awesome Fanfics (3 replies)

There is much awesome fanfiction on the internet, but don't you hate sifting through all the garbage to find the good stuff? Well, here's a thread for listing awesome fanfiction! If something like this already exists, I haven't seen it.

Anyway, here we go!

Title: Chivalry
Series: Bleach
Where: [www.fanfiction.net]

Description: Ever wonder why Tatsuki, Ichigo's best friend for years, never gained powers? Well, this author did, and she wrote a fanfic about it! Tatsuki is basically the main character, although the story is the same as the manga but with Tatsuki tagging along.

Title: Ripples in the Pond
Series: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Where:[www.fanfiction.net]

Description: Has there ever been a title more appropriate for a series than JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? If you've never read the manga, no fear! This fanfic is basically a reboot, setting the manga in a more modern setting. The ONLY good JoJo fanfic I've ever read, but damn is it good! One of the best fanfics I've ever read!

Joseph Joestar and his friend, REO Speedwagon, while attending college must face supernatural terrors in the form of people manifesting creatures of their own life force, Stands, and using them for evil. Luckily, Joseph is a practitioner of Hamon, a martial art that is one of the few ways of injuring a Stand!

Title: Strays Siren
Series: Naruto
Where: [www.fanfiction.net]

Description: Naruto has a lot of side characters, which may be the secret of it's popularity. Everyone has favorite characters. My favorite characters happen to be the Sound Three, the genin from sound village during the chunin exams... yeah, I'm wierd. So color me suprised when I find an epic fanfiction about these three! It basically follows the lives of Dosu, Zaku and Kin. And it's awesome.

Title: Silent Hill: Praying in Vain
Series: Silent Hill
Where: [www.fanfiction.net]

Description: Silent Hill is one of those series wher fanfic writers have a difficult time capturing the feel, the atmosphere, of the original series. Here, it's feels like Silent Hill, which is more than i can say for most SH fanfiction. If you can get past the anvilicious moral, and some predictable plot points, it is one of the best SH fanfics on the net!

Everyone else who knows great fanfics, tell us!

Comic Reviews, by your Neighborhood Friendly Kiinan Yamasu. (7 replies)

Hey everyone. Now, I realize that on this site, there's really nothing of a forum for fans of comics. No, I'm not talking about manga, even though they're the same thing. I'm talking about American comics, like Marvel Comics, DC, Image, that sort of thing. I intend to fix this, as I am a major comic book fan, though I don't own many due to the absence of a specialty comic store in my city.

But the comics I DO have, I am more than capable of reviewing. This will also include those comics that are manga-styled, such as In Odd We Trust, or the Scott Pilgrim series.

Speaking of, I think that's a good place to start.

Scott Pilgrim
Author: Bryan Lee O'Malley
Began Publication In: 2004
Genre: Action, Comedy, Romance

If you've been watching TV, odds are you've heard of the Scott Pilgrim series by now from the movie trailer for it. Scott Pilgrim is a 23 year old slacker that plays bass for a garage band named "Sex Bob-omb", lives with a cool gay roommate, and has no employment to speak of. On top of that, he's recently started going out with a 17-year old Chinese high school student. But then he sees a girl in his dreams, then meets her in real life, becoming obsessed with her. As it turns out, this girl is named Ramona Flowers, and she's new in town. Scott and Ramona quickly fall in love...

And then it gets crazy, when during a band gig, a boy named Matthew Patel crashes in, challenging Scott to fight. At this point, you realize that something is going to be VERY... different about this series. After the fight, Scott confronts Ramona, who says that if Scott and her are going to continue seeing each other, he'll have to defeat her seven evil exes in combat.

You read that right. Seven evil exes. And Scott has to defeat them all.

I have basically given you the synopsis for the first volume of the series. Now, even if this plot was the only interesting thing about the series, it'd be worth reading. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The humor and romance are well paced and enjoyable, and the story never feels like it drags out. But the big reason that most people I know would love this comic... it's SWIMMING in musical and video game references.

I'm not kidding. Video game injokes are EVERYWHERE, and the entire comic seems to take place in a world that runs on River City Ransom Logic, right down to every defeated ex poofing out of existence and turning into a bunch of coins. ("Aww man, 2.10?! That's not even enough for the subway back home!") I'd suggest making a drinking game out of it by taking a shot of alcohol every time you spot a game joke you recognize, but it's likely that you'll be under the table before you finish the first half of any given volume.

As of this review, I have not read the last volume, Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, so I will likely give my short opinion of that volume when I read it. But as for the first five volumes, they are genuinely enjoyable and funny. Do remember, though, partway through the comic, the art style changes a little.

Speaking of, the art style is very simplistic, but at the same time... it's still some of the most expressive I've seen. As I've heard, it's a departure from Brian Lee O'Malley's other work, but it's a welcome change if that's the case, because for me, the simple art is part of the charm. And really, it's better than all the samey realistic artwork you see in most comics nowadays.

Overall, I'd have to give this comic a pretty high reccomendation. If not for the likable characters, the funny moments and the crazy plot, then for the simple virtue of having a crapton of gamer's references. This is a comic for the gamer in all of us, plain and simple.

Passing stories around~ (7 replies)

As I'm sure you're all aware, I once wrote a story called "Moxy's Maneuvers" for a comic contest, which I won. As I'm not so sure you're all aware, one year later, I wrote a much worse story for the same contest, which I did not win for what I both then and now consider obvious reasons.

As there's no way anyone could possibly be aware, I don't think that contest is going on this year, and as such, I really want to get on to writing both "Blue Eyes: Parallel Worlds", and some more stories-for-money. Plus, even if the contest WERE going on, it's doubtful that I could beat the deadline anyway as a result of my moving in two weeks.

That being said, I had a general IDEA for a B.E. story about a woman whose stories begin to affect the world around her, but I really have no reason to write it compared to the other things, mostly because I don't get to show up Tohru Nishimaki or earn money with it.

Which you'll soon notice I gave to my buddy Deathtronhammer, whose stories I've always liked, to have some fun with. I will only provide him with the very basics and let him go from there, so I do hope that the results will soon be pleasing to your eyes and imaginations. Hell, he's done well so far, so I'm expecting some fun antics.

So keep an eye out.

favorite actors/actresses? (3 replies)

Thought I'd start a conversation. It takes some amazing acting to bring our favorite characters to life on the big screen,so I thought I'd mention a few of my favorites.Feel free to share a few of your own!

1. Patrick Stewart- In my two favorite roles as Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier,he doesn't take crap from no one.He has a sense of humor, but can get very angry when someone steps out of line. Some of my favorite moments were found in the 'Next Generation' Star Trek movies.

2. Bill Murray- As Dr.Peter Venkman, his wit is scathing, and in Scrooged, his character Frank Cross is pretty cruel, untill he gets a little divine intervention. He also played a sinister mobster in Mad Dog and Glory.Somehow, he always knows just how to get a laugh, even as a bad guy.

3. Uma Thurman- In Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, she was a bit more serious of a character, but in Batman and Robin and My Super Ex-Girlfriend,she showed a more comical side.Weather she's using a samurai sword to chop people down,or using plants to tie up Batman, she's played some interesting characters.

4. Kane Hodder- When you play someone like Jason Voorhees,it's hard to express emotion without speaking, but he did an amazing job.Kane played Jason in 4 Friday movies, and still has a big following to this day.Weather haunting Crystal Lake, painting Manhattan red,or destroying space marines,it's doubtful anyone will play Jason more times than Kane has.

5. Harrison Ford- Although he's played dramatic parts like in the movie Regarding Henry,my fondest memories of Harrison can be summed up in five words: Han Solo and Indiana Jones.Han is the smartass of the galaxy in Star Wars, and good with a blaster, too.Indy is the ladies man,but watch out for that whip.Having two iconic characters under his belt wasn't a stretch for him,he also played Jack Ryan in a few movies based on Tom Clancey's best-selling novels, like Clear and Present Danger.

Any of you guys also seen it? I thought it was fairly good, at least for a J.J. Abrams $200 mil. explosions-in-space fest, but I felt it could have been more authentic. I wish they had chosen the later series as the model for the movie, instead of the original. Any fellow trekkers residing here at the forum?
